Three Major Types of Private Cloud Solutions

Three Major Types of Private Cloud Solutions

Cloud solutions have become the top choice for business owners who aim to cut costs, increase efficiency, and boost workforce mobility. In particular, more and more businesses favor a private cloud environment because it's more secure and, therefore, ideal for them.

Private clouds provide an exclusive infrastructure for each client. It gives that client more control over their data and provides a higher level of security, which makes data compliance and security policies easier to manage.

As a class of IT services, private clouds can be subdivided further according to where these are hosted and how much value is added for users to enjoy. Let’s take a quick look at the three major types of private clouds:

This is the base-level, traditional type of private cloud. A cloud service provider (CSP) hosts the cloud solution on-premises or in an off-site data center, and the provider makes a particular server exclusive for a client.

The CSP configures the private cloud, maintains the hardware for it, and keeps every cloud software updated. However, the day-to-day operations of this cloud is left entirely to the user.

Managed Private Cloud

Essentially, this is a hosted private cloud, but with additional managed IT services included. These services are mainly the management and monitoring of the daily operations of the client’s cloud. Other added-value services that the client may opt in on include security audits and Identity and Access Management (IAM).

All of this makes Managed Private Clouds the most expensive type of cloud there is. However, for companies that want to enjoy the cloud benefits they want without any of the headaches of managing their cloud themselves, this is the perfect private cloud for them.

Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

This type of private cloud lets an organization establish its own private cloud-like computing environment on a shared public cloud. It allows a company to define and control a virtual network that is isolated from other public cloud tenants, which makes for a private and secure place in the public cloud. To illustrate, it’s like going to a restaurant, but skipping the crowds and going straight to the private convention room.

The major benefit of this type of arrangement is that it grants clients scalability. Traditional private clouds tout tighter security and better reliability than public clouds, with the tradeoff being that private clouds are less scalable than public ones. This tradeoff is acceptable to organizations with predictable resource needs, but what if your resource needs vary wildly? By using an isolated section of a public cloud and making it private, you gain the security benefits of the private cloud, but still retain the scalability of a public one.

Additionally, since private clouds are also known for greater reliability, VPC providers work extra hard to provide this and keep their clients happy. And when compared to non-VPCs, VPCs are less expensive since clients get to enjoy the economies of scale that public clouds provide.
